What Is the STANLEY 70-385E?

STANLEY 70-385E is a double-ended shallow-offset metric ring spanner with 14 mm and 15 mm ring sizes.
Both ring ends use a 12-point, or bi-hex, profile. The closed ring surrounds a correctly sized fastener head, while the shallow-offset geometry positions the handle away from the fastener plane to provide additional working clearance.
This makes the model relevant where 14 mm and 15 mm fixed-size ring engagement is required together with moderate clearance around housings, brackets, frames or nearby components.

Key Specifications of STANLEY 70-385E

Why the Shallow Offset Design Matters

Fasteners positioned close to a flat surface, machine casing, structural frame or adjacent component can leave limited room for the operator’s hand and spanner handle.
The shallow-offset geometry raises the handle away from the fastener plane, providing extra clearance while retaining a relatively low-profile form.
This is useful where the fastener itself is accessible but surrounding structures restrict comfortable operation of a flatter tool.
A shallow-offset spanner is different from a deep-offset design. If the nut or bolt is deeply recessed or a much larger obstruction must be cleared, a deep-offset tool may be more appropriate.

What Does the 12-Point Bi-Hex Profile Do?

The STANLEY 70-385E uses 12-point ring engagement.
A bi-hex profile provides additional possible engagement positions around a compatible fastener. This can make repositioning easier when surrounding components restrict the available handle swing.
Always match the correct 14 mm or 15 mm end to the actual fastener. A worn, badly rounded or incorrectly sized fastener should not be forced with the tool.

Chrome Vanadium Steel Construction

The 70-385E is manufactured from Chrome Vanadium Steel.
CRV is widely used for hand tools intended for repeated manual fastening because it provides the strength required for normal mechanical and maintenance work when the correct size and technique are used.
The 70-385E remains a manual hand spanner. It should not be treated as an impact-rated tool or as a calibrated torque-control instrument.

Where Can STANLEY 70-385E Be Used?

Actual suitability depends on the equipment and fastener specification, but the 14×15 mm configuration can be relevant to:

Industrial Machinery Maintenance

For tightening and loosening compatible 14 mm and 15 mm metric nuts and bolts during inspection, adjustment and routine servicing.

Automotive and Mechanical Servicing

For applicable metric fasteners in vehicle, engine, transmission and general mechanical service work where ring-end access is available.

Workshop Repair

For technicians who regularly work with 14 mm and 15 mm fasteners and require a fixed-size double ring spanner.

Equipment Assembly and Adjustment

For manual assembly or adjustment tasks where a shallow-offset profile provides useful clearance around frames, housings or nearby components.

Is STANLEY 70-385E Right for Your Requirement?

Choose this model when you specifically require:

• 14 mm and 15 mm metric sizes
• double ring-end engagement
• 12-point / bi-hex profile
• shallow-offset clearance
• a fixed-size manual hand spanner
• exact model 70-385E.

Before ordering, confirm the actual fastener size and access geometry rather than selecting the tool solely by brand or appearance.

STANLEY 70-385E vs Other Spanner Types

Compared with an Open-End Spanner

The 70-385E uses closed ring ends rather than open jaws. An open-end design can be more suitable when the tool needs to approach a fastener directly from the side.

Compared with a Combination Spanner

A combination spanner typically provides an open end and ring end of the same size. The 70-385E instead provides two different ring sizes: 14 mm and 15 mm.

Compared with a Deep-Offset Ring Spanner

A deep-offset spanner provides greater separation from the fastener plane. The 70-385E is intended where a shallower amount of clearance is sufficient.

Compared with a Ratcheting Spanner

The 70-385E is a conventional fixed ring spanner without a ratcheting mechanism. Choose a ratcheting model when repeated turning without lifting the tool is a specific requirement.

Compared with an Adjustable Spanner

An adjustable spanner can accommodate a range of fastener sizes. The 70-385E is a fixed-size tool intended specifically for compatible 14 mm and 15 mm metric fasteners.
