STANLEY 70-942E Technical Specifications

The STANLEY 70-942E is a fixed-size metric combination spanner. Its open end and ring end are intended for correctly sized 12mm hexagonal fasteners.

Detailed Dimensional References

The STANLEY product specification drawing identifies the following dimensions for model 70-942E:

These dimensions correspond to the labelled positions in the product drawing.
If you need to work close to a housing, motor body, guard or other obstruction, compare the dimensional drawing with the actual access available around the fastener.
The nominal 12mm size identifies the intended fastener-head dimension, not the overall width of the tool.

Features and How They Help

Open-End Jaw for Side Access

The open-end jaw allows the spanner to approach a compatible 12mm hexagonal fastener from the side.
This can be useful when a surrounding component prevents the ring end from being positioned over the fastener.
The open end incorporates an anti-slip design. It should still be fully seated against the correct-sized fastener before force is applied.
An incorrectly sized or partly engaged jaw can slip and damage the fastener's corners.

Ring End for More Enclosed Engagement

The ring end fits around the head of a compatible hexagonal nut or bolt.
When there is enough clearance to seat the ring properly, it provides an alternative to the open-end jaw and engages more of the fastener's perimeter.
Use the end that can be positioned securely for the particular task. Avoid turning the fastener when the ring is only partly engaged.

Maxi-Drive Profile

STANLEY identifies Maxi-Drive as a feature intended to help reduce fastener rounding.
For effective engagement, select the correct tool size, seat the head fully and keep the spanner properly aligned with the fastener.
The Maxi-Drive feature does not mean the spanner can compensate for a severely damaged or incorrectly sized fastener.

Chrome-Vanadium Steel and Matte Finish

The tool is made from chrome-vanadium steel and has a matte finish.
The manufacturer describes corrosion-protection features. Normal cleaning and dry storage are still important for preserving the tool's working condition.
These design characteristics do not make the spanner an impact-rated tool, a calibrated torque wrench or an electrically insulated tool.

Choosing the Correct 12mm Fastener

A 12mm spanner is intended for a compatible hexagonal head measuring 12mm across flats.
Across flats means the distance between two opposite, parallel faces of the nut or bolt head.
This measurement is different from the bolt's threaded diameter.

Check the Actual Nut or Bolt Head

Do not choose the STANLEY 70-942E only because a bolt has a particular metric thread designation.
For example, a fastener described as M8 or M10 does not automatically have a 12mm head. Head dimensions depend on the specific fastener standard and design.
Measure the hexagonal head across flats or consult the fastener's technical drawing.
If it is not 12mm, select the correct spanner size.

Check Access Around the Fastener

Before choosing a combination spanner, consider the space around the bolt or nut.
A correct size may still be unsuitable if the fastener is too recessed, the working area is obstructed or there is insufficient room to move the handle.
The 160mm overall length is useful when comparing the tool with the available operating space.
For recessed fasteners, a compatible socket and handle may be more practical.

Avoid Incorrect Imperial Substitutions

A metric 12mm spanner should not be treated as automatically interchangeable with an inch-size wrench.
Where an imperial fastener is involved, select a wrench of the correct across-flats dimension.
Using a loose-fitting substitute can increase the risk of slippage and damaged fastener corners.

Applications of the STANLEY 12mm Combination Spanner

The STANLEY 70-942E is suitable for manual tightening and loosening of compatible 12mm hexagonal fasteners where the fastening procedure permits a conventional hand spanner.

Machinery and Equipment Maintenance

Maintenance teams may use the 12mm spanner on suitable fasteners in accessible machine guards, brackets, mounting assemblies and equipment covers.
Always follow the relevant isolation and maintenance procedure before working on machinery.

Mechanical Assembly Work

In workshops and assembly environments, the combination design can assist with turning compatible small nuts and bolts during fitting, adjustment and routine servicing.
Choose the open or ring end according to fastener access and correct engagement.
If assembly instructions prescribe a particular tightening torque, use an appropriate calibrated torque wrench.

Brackets, Fixtures and Supporting Hardware

The tool may be used for accessible 12mm-head nuts and bolts securing suitable mechanical brackets and fixtures.
The required tool size, tightening procedure and fastener strength must come from the actual component specification.

Maintenance Toolrooms and Technician Allocation

A pack of ten identical spanners can suit organizations that need to issue the same 12mm tool to several technicians or workstations.
It can also help a toolroom maintain a defined quantity of frequently used hand tools.
Determine how many individual spanners are needed, then order the required number of ten-piece packs.

Safe Operation and Tool Limitations

Keep the Spanner Properly Engaged

Make sure the open end or ring end sits fully against the fastener before turning it.
Avoid applying force at an angle or using a tool with visibly deformed jaws or a damaged ring profile.
If a fastener is badly rounded, use the appropriate removal method instead of continuing with an ordinary spanner.

Avoid Hammering and Extension Pipes

The STANLEY 70-942E is a manually operated combination spanner.
Do not strike it with a hammer or add an improvised extension pipe to multiply leverage unless a tool and procedure are specifically designed for that method.
Such misuse can overload the tool or damage the fastener.

Use the Correct Tool for Measured Torque

A conventional spanner does not display or control the amount of torque applied.
Where the equipment manufacturer specifies a tightening value, use the correct calibrated torque wrench.
Do not interpret the spanner's length or steel construction as an approved torque rating.

Electrical Equipment Safety

This model is not identified as a certified insulated tool for energized electrical work.
When servicing electrical equipment, follow approved isolation procedures and use suitably rated tools for the task.

Inspection and Storage

Before use, check for cracks, distortion, excessive wear or damage to the working ends.
Clean the spanner after use and store it in a dry toolbox or tool rack. Replace or remove damaged tools from service.

When Another Spanner Is Better

Not every maintenance task requires the same spanner design.

The STANLEY 70-942E is a fixed-size combination spanner. It is not adjustable or ratcheting.
