STANLEY 70-940E Technical Specifications

The STANLEY 70-940E is a fixed-size metric combination spanner intended for compatible 10mm hexagonal nuts and bolt heads.

Additional Dimensional References

The STANLEY technical drawing provides these measurements for model 70-940E:

The labels correspond to the dimensions shown in the product drawing. When planning work in a confined space, compare these values with the actual drawing and the available clearance around the fastener.
The nominal 10mm size identifies the intended hexagonal fastener-head dimension; it does not describe the overall width or length of the spanner.

Open-End and Ring-End Design

The STANLEY 70-940E combines two engagement styles. Both are designed for appropriately sized 10mm hexagonal fasteners, but each can be useful in a different access situation.

Open-End Jaw for Side Access

The 10mm open end can be placed onto the sides of a compatible nut or bolt head.
It is useful where the fastener cannot easily be approached from above or where adjacent components restrict the ring end.
The open-end jaw incorporates an anti-slip design. For a secure fit, position the jaw fully on the fastener and make sure the 10mm size matches the actual head.
Avoid working with a loose-fitting jaw or a severely damaged fastener. Poor engagement can lead to slipping and rounded corners.

Ring End for More Enclosed Contact

The ring end fits around the head of a compatible hexagonal fastener.
Because the ring surrounds more of the head than an open jaw, it can be a useful option for loosening or tightening a fastener when access allows the ring to be seated fully.
Do not apply turning force while the ring is partly engaged or angled away from the fastener head.

Maxi-Drive and Chrome-Vanadium Construction

The manufacturer describes a Maxi-Drive profile intended to help reduce the possibility of rounding fastener corners.
The tool also uses chrome-vanadium steel, a matte finish and an anti-slip open-end design.
These construction features support normal manual wrenching tasks. They do not make the spanner a calibrated torque wrench, an impact tool or an insulated electrical tool.

How to Confirm 10mm Fastener Compatibility

The most important selection check is the actual head size of the nut or bolt.
A 10mm spanner fits a compatible hexagonal fastener measuring 10mm across flats—the distance between two opposite, parallel faces of the hexagon.
The tool's nominal size is not the same as the threaded shank diameter.

Check the Hexagonal Head, Not Only the Thread

A fastener described by its thread size may have a head dimension determined by the particular product standard or design.
For example, some M6 fasteners have 10mm heads, but this is not a universal rule for every fastener or head style. Do not assume that any M6, M8 or M10 fastener will fit without checking its head.
Measure the actual hexagon across flats or consult the component's technical drawing.

Check the Working Clearance

A correct 10mm fit is only one part of tool selection.
Also check that:

• The spanner can reach the fastener without obstructing nearby components.
• The open-end or ring-end head can engage properly.
• There is sufficient room to move the 140mm handle through a useful angle.
• A conventional manual hand spanner is appropriate for the fastening procedure.

Where the fastener sits in a recessed or obstructed position, a socket, offset ring spanner or another suitable tool design may offer better access.

Avoid Using an Incorrect Metric Size

Do not substitute the 10mm spanner for a 9mm or 11mm fastener or force it over a larger hexagonal head.
Incorrect sizing increases the risk of slipping, damaging the head or deforming the tool.
If a different size is required, choose the correctly sized model from the available spanner range.

Applications of STANLEY 70-940E

This tool is suitable for manual fastening work where the nut or bolt head is compatible with its 10mm open and ring ends.

Machine and Equipment Maintenance

Maintenance technicians may use this spanner for compatible fasteners in accessible guards, brackets, covers and small equipment assemblies.
Before beginning work, follow the applicable equipment isolation and service procedures.

Mechanical Assembly and Adjustment

In fabrication or assembly settings, the spanner can assist with the positioning and manual fastening of suitable 10mm-head hex bolts and nuts.
Use a correctly specified torque wrench separately when the assembly requires a defined tightening torque.

Brackets and Mounting Hardware

The combination of an open end and ring end can be useful on accessible mounting brackets and mechanical fixtures where the two approaches offer different access options.
The appropriate fixing method still depends on the component, material and applicable installation instructions.

Workshop and Service Tool Allocation

A ten-piece pack can be practical when multiple mechanics or workstations need the same 10mm spanner.
Rather than purchasing one large multi-size assortment for every person, some teams may need several copies of a frequently used size.
Confirm the tools required for each workstation before selecting the pack quantity.

Correct Use, Handling and Limitations

The STANLEY 70-940E is a manual combination spanner. Proper use is important for the tool, the fastener and the surrounding equipment.

Use the Correct Fastener Size and Engagement

Check that the working faces of the fastener are in usable condition.
Seat the chosen spanner end fully before applying force. If the head is badly rounded, damaged or inaccessible, choose an appropriate extraction or specialist method rather than forcing an ordinary combination spanner.

Do Not Apply Hammer Impacts or Extension Pipes

The spanner is not identified as an impact-rated tool.
Avoid striking its handle with a hammer or fitting an improvised extension pipe to increase leverage. Such practices can overload the tool, damage the fastener or cause injury.

Use a Torque Wrench When Required

A 140mm spanner provides manual leverage, but the actual torque applied depends on the operator's force, direction and grip position.
The STANLEY 70-940E does not measure or control tightening torque.
When equipment instructions specify an exact tightening value, use a suitable calibrated torque wrench.

Electrical and High-Risk Applications

The spanner is not identified as a certified insulated tool for energized electrical work.
Do not rely on its finish or appearance as electrical protection. Follow approved isolation practices and use properly rated equipment where required.

Cleaning and Storage

Inspect the jaws, ring profile and body for visible damage before use.
Wipe the tool clean after use and store it in a dry toolbox or tool rack. If the tool becomes worn, bent or damaged, remove it from service and assess replacement.

Is a Single-Size Combination Spanner the Right Choice?

Choosing the correct tool depends on the number of fastener sizes involved and the way the fasteners can be accessed.

The 70-940E is a fixed-size manual spanner, not a ratcheting or adjustable tool.
Explore other STANLEY products or compare available Spanners if the task requires a different size or format.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the STANLEY 70-940E?

The STANLEY 70-940E is a 10mm metric combination spanner made from chrome-vanadium steel. It has a 10mm open-end jaw and a matching ring end.

2. What is the length of this spanner?

The listed overall length is 140mm.

3. How much does one STANLEY 70-940E weigh?

The manufacturer's technical table lists an individual tool weight of approximately 0.039kg, or 39g.

4. Is the Indus MegaMart price for one spanner or a pack?

It is for a pack of ten identical STANLEY 70-940E 10mm combination spanners.

The open end allows side access to a matching fastener. The ring end surrounds more of the fastener head and can provide a useful alternative when it can be fully seated.

8. Does the STANLEY 70-940E have a ratchet mechanism?

No. It is a conventional combination spanner with an open end and a ring end, not a ratcheting spanner.

9. Can the 70-940E be used instead of a torque wrench?

No. It does not measure or set torque. Use a calibrated torque wrench for procedures requiring a specified tightening value.

10. Can I use this tool on live electrical equipment?

It is not identified as a certified insulated tool for live electrical work. Use correctly rated equipment and follow the applicable electrical safety procedures.
